BADLANDS (1973) Criterion Collection
Director: Terrence Malick
Cast: o.a. Martin Sheen, Sissy Space, Warren Oates
It is based on on the real-life murder spree of Charles Starkweather and his girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugate, in 1958.
Martin Sheen is Kid Carruthers, a psychopath who looks like James Dean. He steals the heart of Holly (Sissy Spacek). After killing her father, who disagrees with their hanging-out together, they flee. People they encounter often meet the same fate. They are chased by cops and bounty hunters, but that doesn’t stop them. They are very distanced from their horrible actions.
Terrence Malick’s first film. A cum laude philosophy graduate from Harvard.
He went on to make Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line, The New World, Tree of Life, To The Wonder and the superb King of Knights.
Great film. Cult Classic.
This is one from the superb Criterion Collection.
