THE LAST AMERICAN HERO 1973
Director: Lamont Johnson
Cast: Jeff Bridges, Valerie Perrine
The Last American Hero is an unjustly overlooked film. It resurfaced through Moviedrome, a film-program curated by Alex (Repo Man) Cox and Mark Cousins.
The idea for making this film came from the article The Last American Hero written by Tom Wolfe. It appeared in March 1965 in Esquire magazine. You’ll find the article in the Tom Wolfe omnibus The Candy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby.
A young Jeff Bridges portrays Junior Johnson, the legendary hard-charging Nascar-champion. He earns his drivers-skills transporting moonshine in his souped-up mustang over the dirt tracks of northwestern North Carolina.
Great film.
Jim Groce’s I Got a Name accompanies the opening-sequence. Groce’s first hit song. He didn’t live long to enjoy the benefits.
